I now have a new mobile phone, a Sony Ericsson K800, which I am rather impressed with at the moment - I am connected to the internet at broadband speed, and am now going to get rid of my home phone line and broadband connection - why pay extra when for £12.50 I can have unlimited internet wherever I am.

The Beautiful South

Farewell, then, The Beautiful South, you will be missed. Thank you for all the good times, all the great concerts, all the great music.

I will always remember the first concert at Poole Arts Centre 18 April 1994 on the 'Miaow' tour, a tiny venue, and a great atmosphere. Since then Shepherd's Bush Empire a couple of times, Dalby forest, Kentish Town forum, Brixton Academy, Bristol Colston Hall, and the Bournemouth International Centre, amongst others. Over 10 gigs in 12 years or so, different every time.

Here's looking forward to new musical ventures from them in the coming years.

Brompton

Hurrah! 4 months after ordering I have finally got my Brompton, rather more orange than I had anticipated, but the more orange the better for me!

Bit of an extravagance as a student, but I wanted the tax refund to go somewhere useful rather than being frittered away, managed most of the hills I came up against, bar one - but as I knew how hilly Bristol is I ordered the bike with reduced gearing.

Reflected logos

The latest thing seems to be these reflected logos, and prompted by a call for a tutorial to do so from uk.comp.sys.mac I decided to have a go, but due to the lateness of the night, it didn't come out too well. Despite having Apple's iWeb the page and logo created took longer and was more unwieldy than simply firing up The GIMP and bbedit. Also the iWeb created page didn't work in Apple's browser, Safari...

Dave Bater Cycles & Brompton mess up

This afternoon I excitedly phoned Dave Bater Cycles to check on the status of my A La Carte Brompton S-type, as when I ordered it on 19 September I was given an expected delivery date of the second week in December, 12 weeks later - a long time, but for something made-to-order a wait I was prepared for - in fact the timing would be perfect as it meant I could use the bike over my christmas holidays from uni.

However today I find Decemeber seems to have been put off until January, a 33% increase in the time from order to delivery. I am mightily annoyed, and feel I should be due some compensation for my dissapointment.

Have just come across Sir Benfro from Paul Smith. It's a up and coming interactive site for children, not much there yet - but Dappler has me hooked.

I cannot link you directly to the page, but if you go to sirbenfro.com, click on "i am small" and either watch the introductory flash, or bypass it by clicking "Main Menu", then use the flying cloud called "Dappler" where you will find a musical game of bouncing balls on a series of instruments. The convoluted paths one can produce reminds me of Whizzball.

Hours of fun for when you really should have better things to do.

On Wednesday I happened to comment to a friend that the 'typical east end alleyway' I came across in Borough reminded me of the a setting from Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - well there is a good reason why it reminded me of that location

Because it is the location from LSTSB. That explains the 'this is not a photo opportunity' graffito - which you cannot quite make out next to the man in the picture.

Bit like the time I happened to pass the fire-station from Ghostbusters as I was walking in New York a couple of years ago.

Yesterday I got the 0720 bust from Bristol and got to London at 0930, headed straight for the Tate Modern where it took me an hour and a half to queue to get tickets to join the queue for slide 4 of Carston Höller's Test Site, and I had finally got my 5 second ride - well worth it. - I was assured that while this wasn't the tallest, it was the fastest - hard hats and elbow pads supplied! Having been to the Tate many times before I didn't stop to look anywhere else, and headed straight for Borough Market - but it was closed, a detail I didn't think to check! But as I was there I happened across the Old Operating Theatre museum, fascinating as as it was also a herb garret it smelt lovely.

Just had a wander about looking at places I have not been before, or for a while.

Then I met m'friend Liz after she finished work just off Oxford Street - in another nice area I had not been to before. Luckily I found it okay, as a passing woman in a drizabone and a motorbike helmet showed me the way.

Unfortunately we only had about an hour before my bus left, and then to make matters worse my bus was an hour late. Bah

To complete the eclectic week that included a death metal gig, a student night cheesy disco/foam party I have just finished off with breakdancing lessons.

As I just described it elsewhere "it's a bit like line dancing, but on the floor" - amazing fun, tiring, I'll be back.

Popped into Waitrose in the week, and came away with a shiney (er, matte) new black MacBook. Sadly I had to leave it at the grandmother's as I couldn't fit the box on the Vespa, so I will have to wait until next weekend for her to bring it to me. From a first play it seems as good as I hoped, just need to get all my stuff on it, and fiddle some more.

Studlands

Have just got back from two weeks in Salisbury and environs, some good get togethers overt the past few weeks.
Yesterday we went to Studlands, near Swanage for a beach party - used to be a regular ocurance, but we haven't been for over 5 years. it was exactly the same, same stories, same stupid jokes, it was great.

The advantages of saving water

Got a big refund on my water rates this week, due to using 1/3 of what the water board had estimated I would use. It pays to switch off the taps.

So I went out yesterday and bought a PlayStation Portable in tart white - I wanted black, but they had none. Also got Lemmings, Everybody's Golf and the reason I wanted a PSP in the first place - GTA - Liberty City Stories.

At the moment, I think I am enjoying Lemmings and Golf as much, if note more, than GTA.

It's quite amusing to read my email on the PSP from the settee, and do online banking (Lloyds works, Egg doesn't).

Haven't yet got it connected to the iBook - plugs in, but then does nothing, not sure what's wrong there.

The thing starts up with a very country music jingle, and has a very OS Xy background
