When I went to Eastwick middle school, I met Martin Harrington, son of the Bakery Magnate (!) and owner of Harrington's Bakery in Leatherhead. My Great-great-aunt Elise had worked in Harrington's bakery from 16 until she retired in 1987. Mr. Harrington bought her a telly, which she still has. Anyway, we were never bad off for cheese straws, let's put it that way. Again, Martin & I were friends (along with Azim, who lived opposite Martin) until I moved away, and we all lost touch. Eastwick middle school was a time of cross-country running, lots of fractions in maths lessons (either me or Martin would bring in a cake frequently, and do fractions with it in maths lessons) I still don't know my times tables, or how to long divide. I made a lot of bad "art deco" pottery (which my aunt still keeps). I did my cycling proficiency test, on a tiny red 5 speed racer. I was a member of the gardening club. We would grow plants outside one of the portakabins. Every day I used to get a taxi to my Great-grand-mother's house with the disabled children. They were a great laugh. I could have done without Keith flicking bogies at me though.

The most memorable things, though, were Mrs. Fletcher, the Shepard twins, a girl called Genine who smelt of bacon, and going skiing.

The Eastwick Ski Holiday was quite a big deal. Not only was Belinda Calisle in the charts with "Heaven is a Place on Earth" (that dates things) but it was the first time I had been away from home for a long period. We went to Vent in the Tirolean mountains of Austria. We all had a group passport (lucky, because at the time I was only on my gran's passport as a child) and flew to Salzburg. We were very rude to people saying "Danke Wanker" when we were served. I remember great hot chocolate and a scary toboggan ride where we went backwards. Oh, yeah, and I learnt how to ski! All that for an extortionate £800. It was great.

After Eastwick I went to the Howard of Effingham Secondary School. There were 2 houses, Ark and Royal. I was in Ark, Martin and Azim were in Royal. And so we never saw each other expect at break time. I got the bus to school in the winter, with Greg who lived in Pound Crescent. In the summer I rode in, meeting other friends on route. In my second year at Secondary School we had to pick modules. I only remember choosing Cookery, because I wanted to be a chef. Greg did Cookery too (and it was straight cookery, none of this Home Economics). At Lunch times you could get great cookies, and butterscotch tart. I love butterscotch tart, but haven't been able to find any as good as the stuff I had at school! Also popcorn with fresh chocolate sauce was available. Mmm.
